Need to bleed a radiator?

The time will come when you will need to bleed the air from a radiator. Air trapped in a radiator often results in the top of the unit feeling cold. We have come up with a really short and simple guide to how to bleed a radiator.

  • Switch off the boiler: Switch off the circulation pump or just switch off the whole boiler reducing the chance of you getting splashed. Allow the system to cool.
  • Get a Bleed Key: Each radiator has a bleed valve at one of its top corners, identifiable by a square bit in the middle of the round plug. They’re turned by radiator keys, which can be bought at any DIY shop.
  • Open Valve: Use the key to turn the valve anticlockwise about a quarter of a turn, do not remove the bleed screw or turn it excessively. It shouldn’t be necessary to turn it further – but have a small container and a couple of rags handy to catch excess spurting water in case you open the valve too far.
  • Close the Valve: You will hear a hissing sound as the air escapes. Keep the key on the shank of the valve, then when the hissing stops and the first dribble of water appears close the valve tightly.

This should remedy the problem of bleeding your radiator, and if it hasn’t do not hesistate to call us on 0208 336 6767 so we can get it sorted for you. If you have a sealed system, you may need to top-up your system too, contact us for further information if unsure.
